Prevention Is Key When It Comes To Drain Maintenance

Like anything else in life you rarely want to deal with an on-going problem, you’d rather nip it in the bud right then and there or even better prevent it. The same can be applied to your plumbing–instead of having to deal with a problem drain, you’d rather it not happen. Easier said than done, right?

Well, by following a few tips on cleaning your sink and garbage disposal regularly can help you prevent any future problems. Prevention is key!

  • You should make cleaning your sink a daily habit. The salt and acid in food can potentially damage the finish of a stainless steel sink and lead to further issues.
  • For cleaning purposes–if your sink has a garbage disposal, pour a half cup of baking soda down the drain and add one cup of white vinegar on top of the baking soda. The mixture will fizz like your making a volcano for the 4th grade science fair. Let the mixture work for a few minutes while you boil a kettle of hot water. Once it has boiled, pour it down the drain.
  • Next, fill the drain with two cups of ice, a cup of rock salt and run cold water down the drain while running the garbage disposal is turned on. The mixture will help get into the nooks and crannies and loosen the grime and debris in the grinding apparatus.
  • You should finish things off by cutting a lemon or lime in quarters and drop them into the disposal to give it a final cleaning. Plus, it’ll make it smell great!
